Graft basics
- GRAFTING YOUR NEW SCIONS - Store your scions in the fridge until you are ready to graft. Make sure they stay in moist paper towels.
- YOU WILL NEED: PARAFILM, RUBBER BANDS (wide), a SHARP BLADE, SCISSORS, LABELS from pie tins, TWIST TIES, PRUNING SHEARS, ALCOHOL (Isopropyl, rubbing kind, not drinking kind), GLOVES. Optional: tool belt, ladder, metal washer, hole puncher.
- Look at the new scion. Is it looking healthy? If not, don’t risk bringing disease into your tree. Throw out the scion. Don’t compost it.
- Cut the scion to 2-4 buds. You don’t want it too long or it will dry out, have more of a chance getting knocked off kilter, and need more energy to grow.
